Level 2 Session Plans.....Goalkeeping

To assist coaches who are taking the new FA Level 2 badge, coaches who are thinking of taking the course, or indeed those coaches who just want to further the coaching education and coaching knowledge, whatever level they coach at, Grassrootscoaching has developed an online educational resource for the new FA Level 2 course, that can assist football coaches specifically to understand how to structure sessions so that the emphasis of the session is on a particular coaching topic and how and why that topic can progress from a technical session, into a skill session and then into a conditioned 4 v 4 game.

Moving Into Line.

Organisation
Grid size: 30m x 20m.
If possible mark out an arch between the goalposts to give the goalkeeper a clearer idea of his movements.
The server passes the ball to A1 or A2 or shoots himself.
Attackers can only have two touches so the goalkeeper must get into line quickly.
Coach behind or next to the goalkeeper, whichever gives you the clearest view.

The semi-circle in front of the goal is used to estimate the position the keeper should take in relation to the ball.

Key Points

Observation
Decision of movement
Technique of movement: Sideways Gliding movement
Direction of movement: Around the Arc
Speed of movement
Accuracy of movement
Balance or Set before shot
Second saves
Technique of Gliding

Both feet must be kept in contact with the ground (to provide an effective base to launch into a dive from)
Legs shoulder width apart (in ready position)
Slide trailing foot across the ground so it ends up close to the leading foot (it should not touch the foot or be too close because you will not have a firm base to push off from)
The moment the trailing foot stops, instantly slide the leading foot in the direction you want to go (just a bit further than shoulder width apart so be aware that the goalkeepes balance will be effected)
Alternate foot movements in quick succession
Keep your head up and eyes on the ball
Direction of Movement: Around the Arc

The goalkeeper should take up a position on an imaginary straight line drawn between the ball and the centre of the goal
The goalkeeper should try to move around a semi-circle (Arc) in front of the goal to give the best angle and distance to make the save
Shot Stopping
The Ready Position

Goalkeeping Narrowing The Angle & Advancing.

Organisation
Grid size: 30 x 20m.
Two goalkeepers play against each other. The first goalkeeper rolls the ball out and takes a shot. The other keeper must narrow the angle by advancing and make the appropriate save. The goalkeepers take turns so make sure that there are plenty of balls in each goal. Progress so the goalkeepers can throw or half volley out of their hands. Add 2 attackers for rebounds.

Progression
Organisation
Grid size: 30 x 20m
A2 passes to A1 who runs in on the goalkeeper and shoots.
A2 follows his pass and acts as a defender trying to close the ball down.
Alternate with B1 and B2.
Goalkeepers should approach fast while the ball is travelling

Switch on (expect a shot at any time).
Get into the line of the ball
Assessment of when to hold and when to advance.
Decision to advance.
Technique of advance: Move up the line towards the ball to reduce the size of the goal for the forward to shoot at. Move forward so you are in a direct line with the ball and the centre of the goal.
Speed of approach (don't go too fast!)
Balance of approach. The keeper should keep his head up to see what the forward is doing. If the forwards head is down looking at the ball ready to shoot then the keeper should stop and get into a balanced set position.
Decision to stop and set for save. If the keeper does not come out far enough then he will not cover enough of the goal and if he comes out too far he becomes vulnerable to a chip over his head.
Technique of stance, knees bent, feet shoulder width apart, head still and hands ready.
Saving technique, correct hand shapes. Scoop, Cup, 'W' and Hands Leading.
Second save
